Statement
Influenced by travels, impressionist masters and personal metaphors, my paintings are created in layers, building areas of texture, light and vibrancy, where the sky represents not just the beauty of nature, but a symbol of endless potential, growth and renewal.
I begin by sketching in graphite then add layers of acrylic to create peaceful view, often focused on the expansiveness of the skies because of how they offer perspective and possibility. My mark making is gestural where the first passes are expressive, then, as the story of the piece evolves, I slow down to consider the narrative. I add textures with my palette knives and scrape back to reveal glimpses of history. I use subtle metallic paints to allow unexpected play between the paintings and light, like the shimmer of a forgotten memory returning.
My own path has been full of contrast which informs my work. I am a military veteran who grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, trained as an aerospace engineer and now a full time artist. I have travelled throughout Europe and North America and despite these many contrasts, I return to the similarities between these various physical and metaphorical landscapes where skies offer a sense of consistency and connection.
Jodi’s paintings are created using only high quality, professional grade paints and Canadian made substrates. They are all original works of art and not available as prints or reproductions. Her paintings come with finished edges, often gold representing the preciousness of memories captured in the work and are ready to hang.
