Fall Fields

Jodi grew up on a family farm in rural Saskatchewan. Harvest was one of her favourite times of year because it brought her family and community together. These paintings draw on the beauty of fall’s golden fields, memories of hauling grain with her grandfather, combining with her parents and family suppers sitting on the tailgate of the truck in the field. They are inspired by feelings of home, family and togetherness.

Each piece in this collection holds symbolism and meaning within the elements of the painting to bring story, memory and connection into the homes where they will live. The work is first rendered in graphite, putting pencil to paper at the beginning of a story or drawing. Layers are then added to fill in the narrative using big brushes, palette knives and acrylic paint. In each painting, the original graphite lines can be found, passages where layers have been scratched back are left in the fields and swirling colours are found in the clouds. Each part hinting at the journey, the memories and the stories.
